The plan is to present Clyde at a trial as a morally weak character who thought about murder but decided against it, then accidentally killed Roberta, then (morally weak) tried to hide the crime. The Griffiths name is to be kept out as much as possible. All the rich are running from him like he's a rat (which he is). The defense team is hoping to get him off with 20 years.
